Blog: Picking a Topic

After creating a large mind map of all my areas of interest and investigating each topic, I have decided upon the topic I will move forward with and base my project around. This topic is the NFL and more specifically, an NFL franchise based in St Helens.

I developed an interest in American Football when I attended Keele University and not long after we met, me and my roommates, started playing for the recently started University team. The team was newly set up and had a small and inexperienced roster of players and coaches. We didn’t play any games in that first season as we hadn’t yet joined the national University league, but still trained despite little to no support from the University’s AU and a unorganised coaching group. Over the next couple years we would join the league and get convincingly beat by the other more experienced teams, until my final year when we got in new coaches along with now having a core of experienced players, which brought organisation and some competitiveness. I have maintained an interest in the sport, continuing to watch the NFL, playing NFL fantasy with a group of friends each year and I now play for a local Flag American Football team which is the none contact version of the sport.

The NFL is a league with a long and storied history and a lot of the teams have a long history of playing the sport similar to historic Football teams here in the UK. There is a growing interest in the sport here in the UK, where there is now a well established amateur league and teams that have been playing the sport for multiple decades. There are now multiple of the NFL’s international games, which are regular season games played abroad, hosted in London with the attendance and demand growing each year.
